ERW2_Session 3- Funbrain

Dear students,

I hope you are doing great.

This week I would like you to get to know two great resources.

Let's start with the first: Funbrain website.

I ask you to browse the website and get to know its great reading resources.

Choose one and start reading it! :)

On this same website, you can also find the first Diary of a Wimpy kid,  which has been a huge success. If you do not know this book series, please read a couple of pages to get to know it. You can read a bit about the author here for example. Afterwards, read this amazing reflection by Laura who shares a very relevant perspective on the book. I will never read Jeff's books the same way...

Thoughts?

Enjoy!

Thirteen books sold in one hundred and forty countries... Jeff Kinney hits the lottery with his “Wimpy Kid”.
These books are very popular amongst the young readers. Some of my students had showed me several of his books in the past few years. Some parents even told me that thanks to Wimpy's stories their sons/daughter had started to read books.
Despite the controversial humour, he planted some reading seeds that maybe can grow into future assiduous readers. Jeff’s books captivate millions worldwide.

Nevertheless, as a special education teacher, I have to agree with my college Sandra and with Laura too. Some topics on the book shares a discriminating image, that we are now, more than ever, trying to eradicate.
Chris Burke, an American formerly actor with Down Syndrome, once said "It's not our disabilities, it's our abilities that count.".
My husband has a different opinion. He says we have to understand these books as a parody of real life. And when it comes to comedy, we have to be able to accept what isn't politically correct, because comedy purpose is to entertain us. In his opinion, if the young girl (and the adult behind the open letter) felt somehow upset, they can always choose other types of readings. As hard as someone tries, we can never please everyone.
It's a more radical opinion, but I thought that I had to share it too. Different opinions keep the world spinning!
