Hello dear students,

So this is our last week!

So, two last "challenges"!

First I want you to take a look at great resources related to Emotional Intelligence.

E.I. can get students more motivated to learn another language - the integration of emotional intelligence activities in the framework of bilingual stories can have a major role in children’s language learning, motivate them toward learning the second language, and improve their metalinguistic, awareness, imagination, creativity and empathy.
Teaching Emotional Intelligence in Early Childhood - RULER (five skills that can be taught to increase emotional intelligence) - Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing and Regulating - (emotions).
In the Mood Meter I try to be in the green zone. Normally I am. And in the Emotional Intelligence and ELT, the EQ capacity for recognizing our own feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves, and for managing emotions well in ourselves and in our relationships. So, personalised language practice is affective in that it encourages learners to talk about themselves and their feelings while making the use of the language relevant, interesting and therefore memorable.
In the books to help your kids develop their Emotional Intelligence for me the key is in the Emotional Intelligence - 15 Tips to Reduce Stress, that's a good way.
Emotional Intelligence is a concept in psychology that describes the ability to recognize and evaluate one's own feelings and those of others as well as the ability to deal with them. From one point of view - philosophy - it is the competence responsible for much of the success and leadership capacity of a human being.
Well, in the School we must offer strategies that help them (parents) talk with their children (and each other) about emotions at home. By taking these simple steps, we can boost children’s emotional intelligence, helping them positively engage in school and in life.
The calm, understanding and the emotions can be strategically 'trained', so that ('you') can positively achieve good goals in the future.

Parents have a key role in learning Emotional Intelligence. Emotional education must come from the family. Since we have learned to react according to all the experiences that we are experiencing but, most of the time, we do not know how to manage in the best way.
It is very positive to teach children how to control their emotions because they learn how to perceive their reactions, how they affect their behaviors, and know that they have consequences for themselves and others. Generally, developing Emotional Intelligence brings numerous benefits on a personal level. It leads to better self-knowledge and increased self-esteem, which impacts on improving interpersonal relationships in the way of knowing and resolving conflicts ... all leading to a better social and personal income.
Some parents have forgotten the importance of saying "no" at the right time, of explaining why not, of helping children grow emotionally. This week I went through a situation where the child cannot deal with their emotions, who cannot control themselves, cannot even hear to become an authentic and frightening "wild animal." And the mother ... did not want to believe ... "because at home he does not do the same. He makes a tantrum and throws himself to the floor, but does not walk over the tables as the teacher just showed me in the photographs he took to show me. "

This boy has a big problem in accepting a "no". It has been showing more and more the lack of IE. Her mother has been called to school several times, including today she has watched the scenes her son does and, in a way, I feel sorry for you. I think she begins to realize that she has made mistakes with her son by allowing him to do everything he wants. The boy, in moments of fury, hears no one, can not control himself. It has not been easy for any colleague who works with the class, but it has not been easy for the other children to watch the beginning of this boy's crisis. We will see if the mother listens to us and takes these children to a specialized doctor, for his sake.

Emotional intelligence (EI) is one of the concepts used in the field of psychology, which means the ability to recognize and evaluate our own feelings and the feelings of others as well as having the ability to deal with them. Emotional intelligence began to be respected and valued recently when before and only, rational intelligence was more valued , leaving emotional intelligence almost apart.
According to psychologist Daniel Goleman, the author of the best seller (Emotional Intelligence) argues that this type of intelligence is not a question of Intelligence Coefficient, but of the control of emotions.
Nowadays we talk about the multiple types of intelligence, which would be ideal for those who seek success on a personal and professional level. There are professionals who depend on interpersonal relationships who may have a high Intelligence Coefficient but are not emotionally "intelligent". There are business and government leaders who do not seem to have this kind of intelligence developed, as well as a few professions. We often say that they are "cold" people because they seem to have no emotions, but it is not always right to say that.
I want to believe that all teachers work the emotions early on with the children because we are not indifferent to the multiple expressions and feelings they demonstrate in class. I think we do not work as much as we would like to work, but every day we come across these situations. As we get to know them at the cognitive level, we also know them emotionally, so there are many techniques and activities that can be developed with them in the classroom, even through the programmatic contents of the various disciplines, namely, through Portuguese texts and children's stories. One of the areas I focus on is through Drama Expression and Theater where they can freely express themselves by creating a character or with the characters previously described. At the end, we discuss about it.

Theater helps me a lot to express myself and to understand other people expressions and emotions. It is a great tool for teachers and students. We can become a comunity of practice and a learning comunity because a theater group work for the same. There is no competition, well...sometimes, but when we work for the same project, we are all ONE.

We need to have a tremendous self-control to stay focused in our daily tasks as teachers without losing a grip. As Salovey & Mayer had allude “Emotions impact our attention, memory, and learning; our ability to build relationships with others; and our physical and mental health”. If we can manage our emotions, we’ll be well with ourselves and with other people around us. This statement serves both teachers and students.
As Ms. Mitchell, every morning, arriving at school, I get a deep breath and let all go away. I greet all the students and family as I pass through the corridors till, I enter my classroom. Then, I greet all my pupils and ask about how are they feeling. I do not use a “mood meter”, but I really care about their feelings. As I, they have to feel good so they can enjoy every day in full.
After reading about it, I do realise that I work four out of five emotion skills every day. I make my students recognize their own emotions and other colleagues' emotions too; I let them feel and understand the causes and consequences of their emotions; I push them to express their emotions in ways that are appropriate; and finally, I help them to regulate their emotions.
I use a table similar to the one presented in the “Emotional Intelligence and ELT” with my students. At the end of each month, the students fill it. Then, we share some thoughts and I always try to advise them to take the right “emotional path”. A happy classroom learns better and faster.
Both parents and teachers have the fundamental role of making children understand their emotions. Working emotional intelligence through bilingual stories books (or not) helps increasing extensive reading motivation, metalinguistic awareness, imagination, creativity and empathy in both native and foreign languages. Disney’s “Inside Out” movie and all the books related to it make children learn how to combine all their emotions as one. We need to be happy, we need to feel fear, we need to feel repulse, we need to feel angry and we even need to be sad sometimes. These emotions, all combined, make us be sharpen and stronger. Here, in Madeira, both public and private school, can embrace the project “Carta da Convivialidade”. This project aims to establish a safe, inclusive, respectful and supportive learning environment. In primary school its manly works children’s emotions with Disney’s “Inside Out” movie as starting point.
Nowadays, we have many materials at our disposition if we want to work EI. If the students are self-aware and have control of their emotions, they will be more motivated to learn, and they will be happier. Nevertheless, we cannot ever forget that, as parents, we have the most important role in the emotional education of our children. Shamefully, some families neglect that “obligation” and throw all the responsibilities to the schools.

Emotional Intelligence is a subject which I have been very interested about since I first knew about Daniel Goleman's theory in the University.
Since I know what Emotional Intelligence is and why it’s so important, I felt the curiosity on: how do I develop it and how do I teach children to understand and regulate their own emotions, as well as how to recognize and react to the emotions of others? There are many books on the subject and lots of resources on web. When my school principal realized my great interest in this subject she challenged me to develop a project on Emotional Intelligence. And so I did. After doing lots of research and gathering the needed materials and resources (there are great resources related to Emotional Intelligence: Articles, Tools, Games and Dynamics, Pictures/Images/Posters, Books and Manuals, Cross-Curricular Exercises and Activities, Stories and Picture Stories), I implemented it, working Emotional Skills with all Primary students, one hour per week, in the Extra Curricular Activities.
First, I taught students to understand the vast variety of emotions and for this it was important to take time to discuss all types of emotions. They all knew that there were six major emotions; happiness, surprise, sadness, anger, disgust and fear. They all recognized them because they had seen Disney’s/Pixar’s movie, ‘Inside Out’. Then I introduced them to the Big Emotion’s Family. Next, they worked on strategies to control their emotions by having them brainstorm on ways they might react in different situations and then allowing them to role play, creating an opportunity to practice their responses.
These were some of the resources I used (the last three belongs to the Program “Crescer a Brincar”- This is a longitudinal program, from the 1st to the 4th year of Primary Education, by Dr. Paulo Moreira (Minho’s University Psychologist), managed by Prevenir Association. The "Crescer a Brincar" Program has been implemented in numerous schools in the country, with very positive results for both children and teachers. The evaluation of implementation’s effectiveness has been published in scientific journals.):

I also planned and organized a thematic afternoon at school entitled "Emotions Day", this was the program : Play “ A aventura dos sentimentos e dos pensamentos”, with the 2nd graders students; - Game “Dance with Emotion”; - Choreography “Happy”, with some 4th graders´students; - Games “Emotiondice”, “Emotional Memory”; “Emotions Ping Pong”; “Emotions’Wheel”; “Basketheart” ; “Hit the Emotion”; “Put a Smile”; “Long Term Memory” and Art Activities: “The Emotion Tree”; “Emotions’ Memory”; “Heart Map”; “Emotional Stamps”.
I was very pleased with what I accomplished not only by the observations I made during the lessons, but also by the students work, behavior and assessment. I got excellent feedback from students, through their self-assessment and through their opinions and thoughts about the activities they did.
This project was to continue but was stopped due to a health problem I had, and also because I was later placed in another school.

Being Emotional Intelligence a subject I love, as I mentioned previously, reading the articles suggested was very enjoyable and enriching experience. They provided ways of how to develop it through reading and other techniques in ELT classes.
Article 1, ‘Teaching Emotional Intelligence in Early Childhood’, by SHAUNA L. TOMINEY, ELISABETH C. O’BRYON, SUSAN E. RIVERS, SHARON SHAPSES (National Association for the Education of Young Children Website), focuses on the mood meter, which is a color-coded tool that provides a shared language for becoming aware of emotions and their impact on teaching and learning. The Mood Meter is a simple and effective RULER tool for helping students to recognize and communicate their feelings.
Research suggests that an important part of effectively teaching emotional intelligence is modeling the five RULER skills for children. One way to do this is by regularly checking in on the mood meter throughout the day.
RULER teaches the skills of emotional intelligence — those associated with recognizing, understanding, labeling, expressing, and regulating emotion.

Article 2, ‘Emotional Intelligence and ELT’, from the British Council Website, focuses on the relation between developing EQ and good communicative language teaching, but enlighten us that the group dynamics necessary for meaningful interaction in the classroom do not occur automatically. We need to be fostered through techniques which build confidence, create a positive classroom atmosphere and encourage co-operation. Personalised language practice is affective in that it encourages learners to talk about themselves and their feelings while making the use of the language relevant, interesting and therefore memorable.
So, the emphasis is on creating an environment conducive to raising students’ EQ. Much of this involves creating a sense of identity, safety and value. In this way, institutions and teachers are responsible for fostering:
• Attachment – A sense of belonging to the school or university.
• Reassurance – That others experience difficulties.
• Bonding – Facilitating the formation of friendships.
• Induction – Informing students of what is available.
• Training – In study skills, time management and stress reduction.
• Holism – Balancing academic learning with physical and social activities.

From the List of ‘10 books to help your kids develop their Emotional Intelligence’, by Vendula (from the Authentic Achievers Website, a blog dedicated to Vendula’s passion for Emotional Intelligence and Personal Development), I already knew the book ‘IN MY HEART – A BOOK OF FEELINGS’ by Jo Witek and I actually worked the story on a training session’s group work choreography I did last year.

I’ve always believed in the power of emotion.
Everyone has emotional intelligence. The problem is that it is for many people an untouched field of life.

I would like to close my writing with the words of Judith Colbert (Early Childhood News, n.d.): „When you give children skills and strategies for controlling their emotions, solving problems and relating to others in positive ways, you give them tools that will serve them well for the rest of their lives.”, Daniel Goleman: “The basic premise that children must learn about emotions is that all feelings are okay to have; however, only some reactions are okay.”and the words of Aristotle: “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.”

After researching the websites recommended by the teacher, I can say that it was a good sharing of knowledge, experiences and materials that we can apply in intervention with our students, namely, emotional intelligence. Of the 10 books presented to develop emotional intelligence, in my professional activity I have already turned to book # 5 "The Feelings Book" by Todd Parr to work with children's emotions. It is a book that portrays the emotions, ways of being, of feeling and principally of knowing and self-knowing. Throughout this book, children will experience the different emotions that the characters are feeling without judging whether there is right or wrong. Feelings are presented as part of human nature, where it is natural to feel sad or half-weird from time to time. It was a very enriching and fun activity.

Young people with greater mastery of their emotions have better academic performance, greater ability to take care of themselves and others, predisposition to overcome adversities and less likely to engage in risky behaviors.

"Many of the problems of adults are due to the difficulties in regulating the emotions and this is not taught in the school", explains Guerrero.

It is about teaching future teachers to understand and regulate their own emotions so that they can direct children and adolescents in this same task.

Insecurity, low self-esteem and compulsive behaviors are some of the consequences of the lack of tools to manage emotions.

I think it should be important to have formations on this subject so we can deal with many situations that happen to our students. When they reach adulthood, they will find it difficult to adapt to the environment, both at work and in personal relationships. We have to start training teachers with the ability to train children in the domain of their thoughts and emotions.

Emotional intelligence is translated into practical skills such as the ability to know what happens in the body and what we feel, emotional control and the talent to motivate us as well as empathy and social skills.

According to some studies, young people with greater mastery of their emotions have better academic performance, greater ability to take care of themselves and others, predisposition to overcome adversities and less likely to engage in risky behaviors - such as drug use and other risk behaviors.

Emotional education is an educational innovation that responds to needs that ordinary academic subjects do not cover.

The development of emotional competencies may be more necessary than knowing how to solve high-grade equations.

The goals of emotional education, according to some guidelines, are to acquire a better knowledge of one's own and others' emotions, to prevent the harmful effects of negative emotions - which can lead to problems of anxiety and depression, and to develop the ability to generate positive emotions and self-motivation.

I consider emotional intelligence as or more important than the quotient of intelligence. What is the use of having a high Q.I. if we do not put it into practice for the good of humanity?
Nowadays, team work is increasingly important, and this is only possible if there is a good relationship with others and for that we have to know how to manage our emotions.
It is not by chance that we often hear cases of people who failed in their school career and later became successful entrepreneurs and even famous people. In my opinion this is only possible because the ability to deal with others surpasses the intelligence itself.
For our children to be successful adults, they must learn to deal with their emotions and control them, and the teacher has an active role to play. An emotionally stable child is more receptive to learning while a child who is constantly making tantrums or is angry cannot concentrate, so will not be able to learn.
It is very important for children to be able to identify the reasons for their emotions so that they can channel them and turn the bad emotions into good emotions.
An unstable child is closed to learning any discipline, even from a foreign language.
By my experience, even communication becomes difficult, when a child is closed in his tantrum. Mismanagement of emotions is like a barrier that forms between the teacher and the student. And learning does not happen when there are such blockages.
For me, when this kind of situation happens it is best to let the child calm down and then talk to her quietly, preferably privately, and try to understand what motivated a this behaviour and then try to direct those emotions.

Emotional Intelligence is an essential tool not only for all people in their daily lives but also for us as educational professionals. Increasingly, this tool is evaluated by our hierarchical superiors and society in general. Emotional intelligence became more talked about in the 90s after the book by psychologist Daniel Golemand, where he tackles this subject. We can ask if the Emotional Intelligence is imprescible for the people and especially for the teachers? Yes, not only teachers, but also all citizens, in order to be able to have emotional balance, to be happy, to have peace, to be able to face situations more easily, that is, not to become emotionally unbalanced easily, this is all part of Emotional Intelligence. In our case, as teachers, Emotional Intelligence is crucial for good teaching performance. For example, empathy and recognizing your emotions are two very important skills. Nowadays our work can not be dissociated from emotional abilities, because in our daily work with our students, we can not work this aspect correctly if we do not have that domain ourselves, which means that we must first develop in ourselves Emotional Intelligence to be able to work properly with the students. Of course, nowadays, with the inclusion of pupils with Special Needs Education in the regular classes, the demand placed on teachers is increasingly higher than the class plans, projects, etc ... All this will demand from the professional greater emotional balance, as it will be decisive that the professional, whether in teaching or in any other area, finds the balance, and the tranquility necessary to give the appropriate answers. Emotional Intelligence is one of the areas of Psychology and in most cases it is little valued in teacher courses, in my case, my degree approached this subject in a superficial way, not giving it the importance due. No doubt parents have a very important role in developing emotional balance in their children. Emotional balance is developed early on as well as the child's education. It is essential to use the appropriate language and convey the feelings clearly and appropriately. It is in these ages that more easily, the child interiorizes the example of the adult when this expresses in words what he feels. The sharing of emotions is thus encouraged and example induces learning.
